| UII Lecturer Becomes Keynote Speaker in International Workshop |

Myanmar, one of country in Southeast Asia, is now basking in the wave of democracy and reforms in all sectors, including media freedom. Indonesia’s experience in instituting media freedom from the shackles of authoritarianism was used by Burma as the references in drafting Press Law and Journalism Ethic. This workshop conducted by Asian Media Information and Communication Centre (AMIC), Friedrich Ebert Stiftung (FES), Myanmar Writers and Journalists Association (MWJA) presented academicians, media practitioners coming from different regions including Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Philippine and Sri Lanka. According to a press release, this workshop was also attended by the Myanmar president’s advisor U Thein Sein and the Burma’s journalists as well as Foreign Journalist. In this workshop, Iwan Awaluddin who is also the secretary of Communication Department, UII delivered presentation entitled 'Laws, Ethics, and Media Freedom in Indonesia after Reforms: Responding to The Internet Age'. In this occasion, Ambassador of Indonesia to the Union of Myanmar, Sebastianus Sumarsono, invited Iwan Awaluddin Yusuf and Yuli Ismartono (TEMPO journalist) to attend at Indonesian Embassy Office in Myanmar.
In the end of workshop, the 11 workshop participants were given opportunity to visit Shwedagon Pagoda and Aung Sang Suu Kyi’s residence.
