This statement was confirmed by Professor of Faculty of Law, Universitas Islam Indonesia, Prof . Dr. Mahfud MD, SH., SU., who is also the chairman of Constitutional Court. He was keynote speaker at public discussion titled “Menuju Indonesia Bermartabat Melalui Kepemimpinan Transformasional” (Toward Dignified Indonesia through Transformational Leadership) at Seminar Room FISIP, Universitas Atmajaya Yogyakarta, on Sunday (4/1). This event was attended by of various elements of society including tionghoa ethnic, several representatives of farmer association, the civitas academica of several universities in Yogyakarta. UII Rector, Prof. Dr. Edy Suandi Hamid, M.Ec also attended in this occasion.
To respond to government performance, Prof. Dr. Mahfud mentioned that recent spate of protest in Indonesia has erupted due to public distrust of government. Take for example, several regional leaders against the government’s plan to increase fuel prices. He viewed this protest was wrongdoing because it would hamper the regional growth. “I object to fuel price hike. However, I actually disagree if regional government strikes against national government since it will bring disintegrity and disunity in our country. Regional leader have a right to against government’s policy. But, this matter can be solved without any protests.” He emphasized. Democracy can be well conducted with the control of law. Still according to Prof. Mahfud, there are still many unsolved corruption scandal in our country. It is necessary to engage integrity and honesty in determining decision to solve national problems. Meanwhile, Rector of Universitas Atma Jaya Yogyakarta Dr R. Maryatmo MA, who was also the speaker at this discussion, stated that transformational leaders are expected to implement vision and mission of our nation’s objectives. The national leaders have to able to convince the important of common interest before self-interest. “They must be the role model and reflect nation’s character and personality.” He stressed out |
