Friday, 20 April 2012

ImageAlthough Consumer Protection Law no. 8 of 1999 has been enacted since 20 April 2000, the existing consumer protection law was still far from our expectation. Consumers were still in a weak position and still not aware of their rights as a consumer. For this reason, National Consumer Protection Agency (BPKN) declared 20 April as National Consumer Day (HKN).

UII Rector, Prof. Dr. Edy Suandi Hamid, M.Ec. who also served as the commissioner of BPKN said that the declaration of 20 April as National Consumer Day was expected to be milestones in encouraging the consumer protection movement in our society.

"The National Consumer Day as Consumers movement is intended to encourage consumers to be fully aware of their rights and create critical and intelligent consumer in today’s society." As told by Prof. Edy who served as speaker at live show program 'Coffee Break' TVOne on Friday (4/20)

Still according to him, National Consumer Day aimed at fostering consumer protection in Indonesia through several activities that can promote consumers awareness and product competitiveness improvement.

In order to mobilize a massive national commitment in enhancing consumer protection, the declaration of National Consumer Day was launched by President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono along with National stake holders including National Ministry and Agency, Members of the House of Representatives Commission IV, Institute for Consumer Affair (LPKSM), Consumer Dispute Settlement Board (BPSK), National Association of Entrepreneurs, community leaders and some university leaders in Indonesia.
