| Corruption in Indonesia Violates Human Rights |

Seminar organized by the Centre for Human Rights Studies (PUSHAM) UII featured several expert speakers including Judicial Commissioner, Dr. Suparman Marzuki, SH., M.Si, Vice Chairman of Indonesian Corruption Eradication Commission, Dr. Busyro Muqoddas, and Constitutional Law expert, Prof. Saldi Isra. Also acting as the keynote speaker was Dr. Artidjo Alkostar, SH., L.LM representing Indonesian Supreme Court. Director of PUSHAM, Eko Riyadi, said that this seminar was initial step to respond corruption scandals which have violated human rights as well as to address the corruption issues around the world. "The phenomenon of corruption is no longer a local matter but universal problems. Thus, it is essential to consider that corruption has violated human rights in the context of state and nation" Eko added. Meanwhile, Dr. Artidjo Alkostar who is also professor of Faculty of Law UII mentioned that corruption is a manifestation of individual’s spiritual disease, a manifestation of the sin of greed individuals and groups, and a social sin. Corruption also destroyed the nation’s dignity. "It is not a surprising fact that corruption practices in Indonesia categorized as an extraordinary crimes which violate human rights." As told by Artidjo who also served as Deputy Chief Justice for General Crime of Supreme Court. He stated that leaders have to initiate to prevent corruption practices by performing good manners and promoting anti-corruption. Community must also engage in social and moral movement to against corruption. He also urged law enforcement to improve their competence ad skill like law knowledge, legal technical capacity knowledge, and moral integrity. Meanwhile, in his speech, UII Vice Rector III, Ir. Bachnas, M. Sc, explained that corruption was called as extraordinary crime because this matter bring worst impact in all aspects of life, especially in social and economic sector. "Corruption as a violation of human rights is one of the crimes that should get highest priority. Law enforcements have to eradicate corruption root and branch" he said.
Ir. Bachnas, M. Sc added, toward more effective corruption eradication, all parties and authorities must seriously show more political will. Share this Article ...       |
Corruption practices not only destroyed Indonesian legal system and economics system but also violated human rights in Indonesia. Moreover, corruption scandals have hampered Indonesian state government’s efforts in fostering good governance and clean government. This critical statement rose at seminar on Mainstreaming Corruption as a Violation of Human Rights, in Jogjakarta Plaza Hotel, on Tuesday (15/5).
