Wednesday, 16 May 2012

ImageGood University Governance is essential to ensure higher education institution to survive in the midst of intense competition. To become an independent university, a higher education institution should conduct self transformation becoming Research University in order to provide operating funds from business sector or building its university as Entrepreneur University.

However, many of study programs at several universities in eastern Indonesia which included in Kopertis region XII still have not been accredited. The recent report mentioned that approximately 30% of the total number of university which included in Kopertis region XII have been accredited. This fact was very ironic.

This statement was stated by APTISI Chairman UII who is also UII Rector, Prof. Dr. Edy Suandi Hamid, M.Ec. when delivers his remark at Regional Meeting Kopertis Region XII, Maluku, North Maluku, Papua and West Papua, which took place at Goodway Hotel, Jl. Imam Bonjol No 1 Nagoya Batam, on Monday (14/5). Also in attendance were Director of National Accreditation Board for Higher Education, Prof. Kamanto Sunarto, Ph.D. SH. and Coordinator of Kopertis Region XII, Ir. Rahawarin Ahmad, MSIE.

Addressing this fact, Prof. Edy suggested universities in eastern Indonesian to initially strengthen its institutions to become teaching university as a stepping stone before building its institution as Research University and Entrepreneur University.

Attended by 200 university leaders and Head of the foundation in Kopertis XII, Prof. Edy was surprised knowing that only 88 lecturers in Papua were certified since there were 39 universities located in Papua. In the contrary, there were 200 lecturers at UII who have been certified.

In addition, Prof. Edy who served as APTISI Chairman expected that central government (Ministry of National Education) should provide stimulus to accelerate the growth of higher education institution in eastern Indonesia, especially Maluku, North Maluku, Papua and West Papua.

To develop educational institutions in eastern Indonesia, Prof. Edy asked to universities in Kopertis Region XII to learn the draft of Higher Education Act arranged by Indonesian government and deliver several advises to APTISI to take active part in promoting university in eastern Indonesia.

On this occasion, Prof. Edy also suggested in realizing independent university, it was necessary to implement good university governance principles that have ever done by UII including the principles of transparency, accountability, responsibility, independence, and justice.
