|Indonesia Needs Visionary Statesman: Mahfud MD|

Many of unfinished problems in Indonesia indicate that our country needs not only politicians but also the figure of visionary statesman who have a proven track record and have no ambition with power. That statement was revealed by Chairman of UII Alumni Association (IKA), Prof. Mahfud MD, when delivers his speech in a seminar held by IKA UII at Gran Melia Hotel, South Jakarta, Thursday (05/24).
"Indonesia ever had statesman figures who were not concerned with their own ego satisfaction like Indonesia’s first President, Sukarno and Vice President, Mohammad Hatta. They had different political views. However, they did not engage in political war instead they were united to provide for the general welfare of the people.” As said by Prof. Mahfud, who is currently serving as Chairman of Constitutional Court.
A national seminar entitled "Longing for Statesman" featured several keynote speakers from across disciplines, including Paramadina University Rector Paramadina, Anies Baswedan, Jend. TNI (purn) Ryamizard Ryacudu (professional army), James Riady (CEO / entrepreneur). Also attending in this seminar was UII Rector, Prof. Dr. Edy Suandi Hamid, M.Ec.
Meanwhile, Megawati who also became keynote speaker said that in order to become statesman, they must really understand history, conceive Pancasila and The 1945 Constitution, concern in a pluralistic society, and stay faithful to the Homeland. "They are absolute ideological requirements that must be met before being statesman," as said by fifth president of Indonesia.
Furthermore, Megawati said our nation's leadership must begin by encouraging ideological zeal. "Never underestimate the significance and the meaning of our nation’s ideology. Therefore, leaders must be able to deliver inspiration and create pride of the nation by improving nation and character building "she added.
