|Saturday, 26 May 2012|
The unsturdy structure/building could cause large amounts of earthquake victims. Based on past experience of earthquake disaster that occurred in 2006 in Yogyakarta, thousand of people were injured because of unsturdy building collapsing during earthquakes. Earthquakes did not kill people, but building did. This statement was revealed by Head of National Agency for Disaster Management (BNPB), Dr. Syamsul Maarif, M.Si at Faculty of Civil Engineering and Planning (FTSP) UII on Saturday (26/5).
"During earthquake at Bantul, the sturdy construction of Bantul Regency office building did not collapse. There was also a house located at Imogiri that did not fall down, just the roof collapsed during earth tremor.” He said in front of reporters before speaking at Workshop on Curriculum Development “Strengthening Aspects of Disaster”.
He said that the current construction of the modern building is not applying local wisdom that set up by the ancestors of Indonesia. They have innovated structure building to prevent hazards. From this reason, He urged higher education institution to promote curriculum concerning this problems since campus is a place to discover theory and conduct research to protect community.
Meanwhile, Dean of Faculty of Civil Engineering and Planning, Prof. Ir. Mochamad Teguh, MSCE, Ph.D., said that this workshop aimed to get disaster management explanation from BNPB. At present, Department of Civil Engineering focused to set curriculum on disaster aspect.
Prof. Teguh also added that this workshop was one of effort to obtain international accreditation. Previously, Department of Civil Engineering received grant from UII. Therefore, Architecture program got opportunity pursuing international accreditation.
