Private Universities Expected to Boost Academic Quality System E-mail

ImageIn the middle of the today’s tight competition, it is a must for private higher education institutions to continuously boost their academic quality system by implementing good university governance including transparency, accountability, independency, and justice. A higher education institution should conduct self transformation becoming Research University in order to provide operating funds from business sector or creating its university as Entrepreneurial University.

This statement was revealed by UII Rector, Prof. Dr. Edy Suandi Hamid, M.Ec., who is also chairman of APTISI (Association of Indonesian Private University) at 2nd Executive Plenary Meeting APTISI period 2011-2015. This activity took place at Hotel Mesra International, Samarinda, East Kalimantan, on Thursday (7/5).

Also in attendance were Deputy Coordinator of Education and Religious, Ministry for People's Welfare Indonesia, Prof. Dr. Agus Sartono, MIA., Head of Education Division Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KADIN), Prof. Dr. Ir. Suharyadi, Chairman of APTISI Region XI-B East Kalimantan, Prof. Prof. Dr. Eddy Sugiarto K., SE, MM, Coordinator of Kopertis Region XI, Prof. Dr. Ir. H. Sipon Muladi, and also the board management of APTISI.

According to Prof. Edy Suandi, the two problems that effect on Indonesian education are the lack of access to education and the education quality and relevance of education. In addition, he also highlighted about accreditation issue. Tolerance time given to private higher education institutions for renewing their accreditation should be responded seriously. "Accreditation is significant point that signifies the quality, efficiency, and relevance of study program at such university.” He explained

Addressing plagiarism issue, Prof. Edy encouraged students and lecturers to produce scientific papers in journals and avoid plagiarism. One effort to avoid plagiarism is by publishing scientific work including research, academic writing, thesis and dissertations on online media publications.

Currently, Directorate General of Higher Education Institution has been providing Digital Reference Guard Portal (Garuda). Also, LIPI has provided Indonesian Scientific Journal Database (ISJD) to accommodate scientific work, especially journals publication and avoid plagiarism as well as enrich nation’s intellectual horizon. APTISI strongly supports DIKTI’s effort in boosting private higher education institution to publish their scientific works, research, journal in Garuda Portal.

Meanwhile, Prof. Dr. Agus Sartono, MIA. in his speech mentioned Indonesian’s goals in 2025 that will become developed country and the12th largest economy in the world as well as country with high economic growth on 2045. It is expected that gross national income per capita in 2025 will reach U.S. $ 13000-16100 and up to U.S. $ 46,900 in 2045. Therefore, to realize the government’s target, the involvement of all components such as academic society is necessary needed.

Prof. Agus Sartono said further that in terms of improving people’s welfare in Indonesia, it should be accompanied by the increasing quality of Indonesian human resources that impacts on the improving of Human Development Index (HDI). Based on report of United Nations Development Programme / UNDP 2011, Indonesia’s HDI ranks of 124 out of 187 countries.

For this reason, to increase prosperity, competitiveness, and independence of the nation, participations and roles from all parties including national universities, both public and private are highly required. It is expected, higher education institutions are able to create excellent nation’s future leaders. "Thus, the quality of national higher education institutions should be improved by implementing good university governance." As told by Prof. Agus Sartono.

On the other hand, the participant of 2nd APTISI Executive Plenary Meeting welcomed by Governor of East Kalimantan, Dr. Faroek Awang Ishak who is willing to support APTISI’s program to improve the quality of education system in Indonesia.
