Saturday, 18 August 2012

ImageAugust 17th, 2012 has similarity with 67 years ago which coincides with August 17th 1945 when Indonesian Founding Fathers announced the Proclamation of Independence in Holy Fasting Month of Ramadhan. There is also a deep meaning behind 17th August that signifies total of 17 rakaat of Moslem prayer. Moreover, 17th of Ramadhan is a moment when the moslem community celebrated the Nuzulul Qur’an (Revelation of Holy Qu’ran). From this reason, 17 number has a subtantive meaning. This statement was said by UII Rector Prof. Dr. Edy Suandi Hamid, M.Ec., when gives his religious speech at During his Syuhada Mosque, Yogyakarta on Friday (8/17).

In his speech, Prof Edy emphasized that the Indonesia’s independence day can not be separated from the roles of UII’s Founding Father including Prof. K.H Kahar Mudzakkir, the 1st UII Rector, who was a member of BPUPKI. He along with Ki Bagus Hadikusumo played important roles in drafting Indonesian constitutions of 1945.These figures highlighted religious value in Indonesia’s counstitution that is ‘Belief in the one and only God’. Declaring Indonesia’s independence day, our founding fathers had also desire to build just and prosperous society

“It is a milestone in Holy fasting month of Ramadhan for Moslem society to continue and realize our Founding Father’s dreams creating just and prosperous society.” Prof Edy uttered. Therefore, we have to rise our awareness toward other people who still live in poverty such as by giving them Zakah and Shodaqoh.

In the end of his speech, Prof. Edy urged all moslem to do self-introspection and give wider meaning in practicing Islamic principles. Upholding justice and honesty in every aspect of life is also important to do.
