Untuk menjadi mandiri, PT dapat melakukan tranformasi diri menjadi research university sehingga memiliki banyak sumber pendanaan dari dunia usaha ataupun menjadikan diri sebagai entrepreneur university. Namun demikian, bagi PT di Indonesia timur yang tergabung dalam kopertis wilayah XII sebagian besar Program Studinya belum terakreditasi. Faktanya baru sekitar 30% saja dari jumlah keseluruhan PT di kopertis wilayah XII yang saat ini telah dinyatakan terkareditasi, hal ini jauh di bawah rata-rata nasional.
