Doctor of Law

Faculty of Law

A successful Doctorate student should at least be able to completely understand and define the theories and facts regarding legal issues through a comprehensive approach and to solve a problem by proposing various scientific alternatives. This systematic problem solving requires students to master the basics of knowledge and ways to find scientific truth. With such mindset, students should be able to build a legal paradigm through the means of research methodology which supports critical, contributive, innovative and applicable academic goals.

Not only do UII Doctor graduates meet the applicable academic standards, they also have unique characteristics. In addition to the ability to understand the synergistic relations between legal issues and the roles of the Philosophy of Science and Legal Philosophy and between Theories of Law and legal principles, theories and rules, they should be able to build new Islamic Legal paradigm by making the Qoran, Hadith, and Ijtihad as their exemplary sources of law for intellectual inspiration.

From the results of their researches, they should be able to give theoretical contributions to the development of legal studies and make pragmatic contributions to government policies as well as to the improvement of quality of life among Muslims and community at large. An ideal view considers Islam as the truth and value system that is able to verify things and to compete with other theories. Therefore, comparative methods and analysis of different legal systems, including that of Islamic and Western laws, are equally implemented in the curriculum.

Based on that reason, our Doctorate program focuses on the ability to conduct two types of research, i.e. doctrinal research (analyzing legal issues by examining regulations, laws, and jurisprudence) and non-doctrinal or socio-legal research that will look at legal issues in relation to social, political, economic and cultural systems of the community. These abilities constitute an integrated process aimed at preparing competent resources with the highest integrity to make independent contribution towards education, teaching, and research, as well as community service .
