UII Students Claim Overall Champion at Gebyar Brawijaya Qur’ani

MALANG—Delegates from Universitas Islam Indonesia (UII) became the overall champion at the “Gebyar Brawijaya Qur’ani Nasional (GBQN) X 2024” having won titles from several competition categories.

The event was organized by the Religious Arts Student Activity Unit (Unit Kegiatan Mahasiswa Seni Religi) of Universitas Brawijaya (UB) and took place in-person at UB campus in Malang, East Java, from Thursday to Sunday (24–27 November).

Themed “Grounding the Heart in Upholding an Eternal Civilization of the Qur’an,” the competition was open to high school students (SMA/SMK/MA or equivalent), university students, and the general public, featuring nine different competition categories.

UII’s student representatives, hailing from various study programs, excelled in multiple categories. The accomplishments include 1st Place Best Musabaqah Hifdzil Qur’an (MHQ) 10 Chapters by Hasna Shofwatul Azizah (Undergraduate Program in Islamic Family Law/Ahwal Syakhsiyah batch 2024); 1st Place Best Musabaqah Tilawatil Qur’an (MTQ) Female by Syamimi Assahira (Undergraduate Program in Islamic Family Law/Ahwal Syakhsiyah batch 2024), 3rd Place Best Musabaqah Hifdzil Qur’an (MHQ) 10 Chapters by M. Mahadir Asnawi (Department of English Language Education batch 2023), and 3rd Place Best Musabaqah Khathathil Qur’an Decoration by Rahma Yana (Undergraduate Program in Islamic Education batch 2023).

UII also secured victories in the Musabaqah Syarhil Qur’an (MSQ) category with two teams. They were 1st Place Best Musabaqah Syarhil Qur’an by Rasihul Hilman (Undergraduate Program in Islamic Education batch 2022), D. Rajbani Gibran (Department of Communication Science batch 2024), and Munawar Salim J. (Undergraduate Program in Islamic Family Law/Ahwal Syakhsiyah batch 2022); and 2nd Place Best Musabaqah Syarhil Qur’an by Muh. Subki (Undergraduate Program in Islamic Education batch 2022), Asep Rizki Suhada (Department of Psychology batch 2022), and Kelvin Alviana S. (Department of Communication Science batch 2024).

Mahadir, who secured 3rd place, expressed his pride and gratitude for the achievements.

“I feel proud to contribute to our university’s reputation, especially by winning the overall champion,” he said.

He shared that support from UII’s student affairs division, including mentoring, transportation, accommodation, and daily meals, boosted the confidence of him and his team.

Aqila, another team member, echoed this sentiment, noting how the camaraderie during the journey fostered a strong sense of family among them.

Discussing the challenges faced, Mahadir highlighted the difficulty of maintaining self-control and composure during the competition. He emphasized the importance of focusing on oneself rather than comparing abilities with other participants.

“Just focus on yourself. Don’t overthink about others being stronger than you. Prayers from friends and family also play a huge role,” he shared.

Mahadir mentioned that his main motivation for joining the competition was to maintain his Qur’an memorization and test his abilities on a larger stage. Aqila agreed, stating that competitions serve as a valuable means of preserving Qur’anic memorization.

“The main motivation is to remain consistent and steadfast in maintaining my memorization,” he said.

Finally, Mahadir expressed his hope that more students will continue to bring pride to the university on national and international levels. “I believe the upcoming cohorts have a lot of potential to elevate UII’s name even further, and I hope UII continues to hold its title as the top Islamic university in Indonesia,” Mahadir said.

Aqila added her hope that the university’s support for students in showcasing their talents will grow even stronger.

“I hope the university continues to encourage students to participate in even larger events,” she said.

They aspire for their achievements to inspire future generations to confidently compete and bring greater recognition to UII on broader platforms.
