|UII Becomes Executive Member International Universities Search and Rescue Council|

As the acts against natural disasters that are arising at an ever increasing scale that threatens the mankind Universitas Islam Indonesia (UII) along with 30 universities from 20 countries jointly established of “International Universities Search Rescue Council”. The founder members of “International Universities Search Rescue Council” came from Turkey, Russia, Cyprus, Nepal, Brazil, India, Jordan, Uganda, Azerbaijan, Poland, Republic of Yemen, and Somalia. In addition, Universitas Islam Indonesia was also appointed as one of coordination committee members along with nine other universities.
The International Universities Search-Rescue establishment was decided during the meeting of 24 April 2012 in Nicosia, North Cyprus. Prof. Huseyin Gokcekus, Vice President of Near East University has been elected as first president of International Universities Search-Rescue. The delegation of UII was led by UII Rector, Prof. Dr. Edy Suandi Hamid, M.Ec. accompanied by Dean of Faculty of Civil Engineering and Planning (FTSP), Prof Ir. Mochamad Teguh, MSCE, Ph.D, and a student from FTSP UII.
Meanwhile, the third international universities search and rescue on seminar and workshop was also held in this occasion featuring several keynote speakers including Prof. Ir. Mochamad Teguh, MSCE, Ph.D. (Indonesia), Prof. Dr. Meen B. Poudyal Chhetri, Ph.D (Nepal), and an expert from Technological University of Istanbul Turkey. Training activities to fight against natural disaster was also organized in this workshop.
As confirmed by Prof. Dr. Edy Suandi Hamid, M.Ec, on Wednesday (5/2) when was met in his office at GBPH Prabuningrat Rectorate Building, our participation in this forum was very significant to better Indonesia since there were many of natural disaster happening in Indonesia like earthquake, volcano eruption, floods, Tsunami storm, and others.
According to Rector, the aim of International Universities Search-Rescue was to facilitate mutual sharing of knowledge and experience to act jointly in the fight against natural disasters that are arising. Moreover, UII’s participation in this forum also was so important to promote understanding and knowledge on disaster management risk.
“Based on our last experience, UII together with other universities in Yogyakarta has always stood at the forefront to proposed solutions during natural disaster like Merapi eruption and earthquake happening in Yogyakarta and Central Java on 2006.” He explained.
He also added that International Universities Search Rescue Council determined to organize annual meeting to discuss relevant topics in cases of natural disasters.
Meanwhile, Prof. Ir. Mochamad Teguh, MSCE, Ph.D. also uttered that UII has taken part in Disaster management forum such as joining International Search and Rescue on University Seminars and Workshops on 25-29 April 2011which involves 21 universities including six universities in Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) and 12 universities from other countries: Britain, Australia, Germany, Indonesia, Brazil, Nepal, Turkey, Ukraine, Oman, Macedonia, Azerbaijan, and Kyrgyzstan.
Furthermore, UII has established collaboration with Near East University (NEU) Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC). Faculty of Civil Engineering and Planning UII has actively engaged in academic collaboration such as in academic and scientific research dissemination. Also, FTSP UII has hosted ‘The First International Conference on Sustainable Built Environment (ICSBE 2010)’.
